Melissa T., NLA, Creator + Founder

Vancouver, BC

With almost two decades of experience as a hairstylist, Melissa T., NLA Creator + Founder wanted to take serious steps and recreate the products that went onto her families’ skin and hair. After completing an online herbalism course that helped her begin to form her ideas for products, Melissa was ready to create. She began to grow her own flowers and herbs to use in her infusions and waters, as well as foraging around for pine sap, rosehips, nettle, wild roses her products. Based in Vancouver, BC each NLA product has been made in small batches and with luxurious ingredients to ensure quality.

Where did the inspiration for your business stem from?

Inspiration came to me after I had my son and became concerned that what I was putting on his skin was chemical free, but I noticed I hadn’t been as concerned for my own skin. Being a hairstylist for 18 years,I knew I could create hair and skin care products that was chemical free, vegan and natural so we could feel good about what was going into our skin.

What is the best part of what you do and why?

The best part of what I do is the foraging. I love being in nature, whether it’s my own garden that I grow a lot of our flowers in, or the woods where I collect nettle, sap and other ingredients. It grounds me and inspires me.

Why is community important to you?

Community is everything to me and my family. Being a single mom who lives in a co-op, our community is so helpful to me raising my son. Doing life together is so much better than going it alone.

What are your goals for the next five year?

Goals for the next 5 years would be to open my own flagship NLA salon, where I can make the products, do hair and have a storefront. I also want to be able to hire some more employees!

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs- get a mentor! Doesn’t have to be someone in your specific field, but someone who understands the aspects of growing a business. It has been my lifeline this past year. I wish I had found one sooner.
