Nightwood Studio was founded in 2016 Owner, Laura B. Laura, who is the sole designer and builder of Nightwood Studio, and offers unique pre-designed items or furniture built to your specifications.

After growing up in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Laura decided it was time to move to Montreal and pursue an undergraduate degree in Literature from Concordia University. During this time she also studied abroad at the Sorbonne (Université de Paris III) for a year in Paris, France.  Looking ahead, Laura had a strong desire to do something hands-on, concrete, and creative. Laura enrolled in the Woodworking program at the Rosemount Technology Centre in Montreal, where she earned her formal training in woodworking.

Where did the inspiration for your business stem from?

I am inspired daily by three things: nature, beauty, and badass women. When I created Nightwood, I wanted it to be the antithesis to “bro” woodworking culture-to highlight the femininity inherent to beautiful things and show that this can coexist with being strong and capable. Women have been breaking down barriers in every field, from the sciences to politics to engineering, and I thought it was time to carry this zeitgeist over into woodworking.

What is the best part of what you do and why?

I have two favourites! I love to design and execute new pieces. Nothing makes me happier than gleaning inspiration from nature, art, design, books, and wrapping it all up into a new Nightwood product or piece of furniture. Secondly, I love the client relationships I get to form, and the knowledge that my passion and creativity is touching people’s lives and inspiring women!

What did you wonder about when you were growing up?

My life has always been filled with wonder. As a child I read incessantly, and my imagination ran wild. My mother was a seamstress and my sister, and I would play dress up using yards and yards of colourful fabric and inventing worlds filled with enchantment and beauty. I sometimes still feel like I am more imagination and dream than flesh-and-blood human.

Tell us about an obstacle you faced with in your life, how did you overcome it?

At the risk of choosing an obvious answer, as a woodworker one of my biggest obstacles has been the cultural bias against women in trades. From condescending bosses who thought I couldn’t understand woodworking to men who consistently explain my own craft to me, I soon realized that the only way was to break out on my own, and instead of vying for their acceptance, carve out a niche where I accepted and valued myself, and put that out into the world.

What are your goals for the next five years?

I am developing the Nightwood Studio furniture line, so please stay tuned! I also want to expand my shop to be able to provide woodworking classes for women– a space where they can learn and experiment without feeling intimidated. For me, it is all about community and inspiring people.
