Vicky G. Echoes in the Attic, Designer, Production Coordinator + Resident doer-of-all-things

Bradford, ON

Since 2005, Echoes in the Attic has rescued and upcycled 80 TONS of diverted textiles and counting. Based in Bradford, ON the company diverts landfill bound, XS textiles by the ton, from designers and post manufacturing. Turning these forgotten textiles into Echoes signature line of Canadian, handmade, upcycled, vegan leather, small-batch eco-bags to be loved again.

Mompreneur business, Laura and Vicky are driven to re-fashion, re-design and re-purpose what some might deem toss-able. Echoes, regularly rescue tons (500 lbs/2 weeks) of XS landfill-bound fabrics. With handmade care, materials are refashioned and re-offered back to consumers as stylish and unique, re-purposeful designs.

Where did the inspiration for your business stem from?

Our inspiration came from the humblest act of reusing my freshly shorn locks and making it into braids that my daughter and I sewed to a bandana before chemo took it in 2003. I didn’t realize it then that this desperate act of recycling would lead us to our business. A business to re or upcycle excess designer textiles into our beautiful line of Canadian, handmade, small batch, Xbody bags, totes, wristlets and more.

What is the best part of what you do and why?

We love designing! We love the process. We love taking gorgeous textiles that would be sent to landfill if not for our company and reinventing and repurposing it into beautiful and useful bags.

What did you wonder about when you were growing up?

Both Vicky and I were raised by parents who had seen the Great Depression. That leaves a mark on you. We both have said we wondered why people throw so much away when you could make something useful.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

If your belly’s on fire for an idea, if you just can’t stop thinking about it, take a step in its’ direction and see what happens. See if something happens on your path that is just the right answer to take you to the next step. Trust your gut and go for it.

What was the most memorable gift you ever received?

The greatest gift is the ability to be the architects of our own days, doing our own business in our own way and be appreciated so well by Echoes Bag lovers.
