Where did the inspiration for your business stem from?

When my now husband Gavin immigrated to Canada from South Africa in 1993 (we were dating at the time,) I needed to find a distraction and took up pottery at a community centre. I soon found that I loved the medium and immediately began making and selling pottery at local craft shows in Johannesburg. When I came to Canada I continued working with clay and grew Dotti Potts with Gavin to where it is today.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as entrepreneurs?

As creative types, we never run out of ideas and potential products to sell. The biggest challenge we face as crafts people is finding places to sell our creations. When you make handmade things, they are naturally more expensive than imported products and customers do not often see the difference. We always try to sell at juried craft shows, where customers know the difference and are prepared to pay the premium. Although there are many venues to sell products, customers are most often not educated enough about handmade to pay the price.

In your opinion, where is the best place to visit in your city?

There is nothing quite like a walk along Barrie’s lake shore, the path extends for 5 kilometers around Kempenfelt bay and the experience is quite wonderful. Best of all, the lake is so close to downtown that it’s easy to walk up to the main street and go for a coffee, drink or meal when done strolling.

What is your favourite component to your workspace and why?

Our workspace has everything on wheels so that it can be reconfigured 100 ways, we can clear the whole space to say drive a car in and give it a wash then everything can easily be moved back into position to continue production.
