Where did the inspiration for your business stem from?
When I was in my twenties, my mother told me that we had native heritage. I was so excited to learn about it but she had not learned it herself so she couldn’t teach me. For the following 20 years I tried to learn as much as I could but had a hard time because I didn’t know any Algonquin people. Then around 3 years ago I had a powerful dream that told me I would make a series of colouring books with elders and artists that would help people to connect with Indigenous culture.
What is the best part of what you do and why?
I love to work with artists and elders and create beautiful calendars, colouring books and other products. I love to give back from sales to Indigenous projects and feel that I’m making an important contribution to reconciliation.
Tell us about an obstacle you were faced with in your life, how did you overcome it?
When I graduated from engineering, my dream was to work in the field of water and sanitation engineering in developing countries. Unfortunately it was a recession and there weren’t any jobs available. Eventually I joined a job placement program called Experience Canada, which got me an oil & gas job. Part of the program was to write a life plan. Thanks to writing this plan I identified all of the steps I would need to achieve to get a job in Latin America in water and sanitation and I achieved my dream within 5 years of graduating.
